I was exploring her home, and what it meant to be moving while feeling so at home in my body in a place that felt so familiar yet so alienating to me as a queer child. Joy as a trans Asian American can be so complicated, as I’ve often felt the need to put my family before my own joyful expression. This particular challenge might have been ‘write a song on an instrument that is not your primary.’ I was listening to a lot of Moses Sumney, particularly his early vocoder stuff, so I wrote “The Breakers” using the vocoder setting on our minikorg. It was one of the challenges I put off to the last minute, writing all the lyrics and changes within 4 or 5 hours and was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the song. I had been flexing my songwriting skills for a month at that point and really began to hit a flow. For me, songwriting has always been about tapping into deep emotions, expressing them and normalizing that kind of self-reflection to others/connecting with shared emotions. At that time, I was really starting to challenge my self-conceptions of gender and deconstructing a lot of walls I had built. Those walls had protected me growing up in a majority conservative community where queerness and transness were the furthest things from acceptable. I didn’t even have words for what I was going through back then. Today, I’m still really interrogating what gender means for me, challenging the norms and mainstream perceptions of beauty and those internalized messages in my own body. “The Breakers” came out of really letting go of what had been written for me up to that point and starting to write my own story, in many ways for the first time. As I continue to open doors of potential for my life and future, I hope this song finds others who have experienced similar moments of letting go and moving forward in loving yourself for who you are. To all my queer fam–Let’s be in community together. It’s challenging af sometimes, but we are together in this struggle. Our trans-cestors were so freaking strong and amazing, paving the way when there was no way.
